“A valuable and rare piece,” remarked Lorian, who had been looking over his shoulder. Steffen couldn’t believe his luck. He was glad that he had not been mistaken when he had spared the she-wolf.

“Come on, move on, or do you want to grow root here?” Wolf urged departure when the mercenaries looked with greedy glances at the ornate door that could be seen in the middle of the passageway.

“And steps again. I’m getting tired of this,” Hogrim complained, catching a nasty look.

The wide marble steps led further into the depths. Since there were no other options here, they followed them down. After 50 steps, they reached the next level. In Steffen’s opinion, they had to be below the water level again.

They did not have many options. There were two more doors directly in front of them in a plain and sparse anteroom. Both were secured only with a bolt that could be easily opened.

The passage behind the left door was closed by a shimmering surface like the ones on the travel portals. The obstacle was insurmountable and all attempts to put an object through it failed. There was no clue as to what was hidden behind it.

Maybe this was the place Thierri had been talking about? Wolf had the same thoughts running through his head, but after Steffen shook his head, he didn’t say the question out loud.

“I’d love to know what’s behind it,” Janine mused aloud.

“We’ll figure it out later, I promise.” At Steffen’s words, she looked at him in irritation, but then nodded with a smile.

The passage behind the other door was accessible to them, so they could pass through it without difficulty. Directly behind it was another set of staircase, five paces away.

This time, however, it led back up into the heights. A glance at the map showed Steffen that they were directly under the center of the castle courtyard. The stairs ended after 20 steps as they entered a vault through an archway. From there, an open passageway led on. The area was not marked on the map, but a hint appeared when they crossed the threshold.
